Luxury(This is your life) You like to win You like control This is your life of luxury You're in the swing You're closer now This is your life of luxury (This is your life) And now you need So on you go This is your life of luxury Yruxul fo efil ruoy si siht
After the melancholy of the previous track, "Luxury" lifts the listener's mood back up a notch from the off with its swing rhythm. That said it still retains some degree of sadness. The CR78 gets great workout throughout, made even better by the addition of synths and studio techniques that only Tony could deliver. Released on single it made no impact, which is criminal. Perhaps it was too subtle for the masses? I think it's a slightly unusual track because it is pretty minimal in some ways (by NM standards), yet lush at the same time. Great touches? Well those classic bell-like synths provide a luxury feel - really smooth and delicious. Vocodered lyrics repeat ("This is your life"). White-noise effects. The sonar pings take on an even greater whooshing effect. And - for the first time - reversed vocals! This album, like the previous, is turning out to be one of those incredibly rare works where you are unable to bring yourself to hit the stop button after singling out a favourite. 95/100 (Richard M)
I've always felt I should have enjoyed this track more than I have. Don't get me wrong, I always thought it was an enjoyable track but the raw ingredients of abundant synths, vocoder, drum machine and great vocals should have made it a firm favourite. The melody is slightly edgy, not quite as infectious as others perhaps? A repeated, quite simple chorus. The drum beat is a bit "chugging" for want of a better phrase. Perhaps an odd choice for a single? But, strangely, inspecting this track more closely has made enjoy it in a way I always suspected I should. It is actually another very clever track. Even more so now I've heard the closing section in reverse. Yes, as we all suspected, the vocals are "this is your life of luxury" backwards. But the most surprising aspect is how close the music sounds in reverse, to how it sounds normally. Have a listen. (Graham G)
Luxury is, was and will be one of my favourite New Musik tracks. When I bought Anywhere, I used to lift the needle up and play this track again after it had finished. I love the electronic drum patterns he uses and the soundscape the song creates. In reply to Graham, I have always thought that the 3 chords in the chorus are played the other way round in the outro with the backwards vocals. (Rich E) |
